How to Carry Out Data Custom Import in NetSuite

Data is the core business utility and it is highly dynamic and sensitive. Data gets updated as the business grows and matures.  Recently, we have approached with a request of importing some specific data into NetSuite. Our client is a premier manufacturer of stainless steel home brewing equipment. For increasing the business utility, they wanted to align HTS code to some specific items to ease the inventory identification process. HTS code is an identification code to identify specific items in a row. NetSuite has the capability to update the data by importing an external file in the form of CSV. So timely updations can be easily rendered through NetSuite custom import. Businesses can easily update the data accordingly.

Requirement

Our client wanted to populate the HTS code and country of origin to the corresponding SKUs in NetSuite. They had to align the HTS code with the country of origin.

Our client has provided us with an excel file which contains details of the HTS  codes and other details, Some of those HTS codes contain strings of digits and some of them have a decimal point. We are instructed to import those details as exactly as they are.

Process

We have updated two fields of HTS code and country of origin and created a search to download the existing data into the two fields.

We then created an item search with all the fields provided in the item data file and compare the search result with the data file.

We have edited and consolidated the excel file provided and transferred it into a format legible for importing them into NetSuite. 

Challenges

There were certain challenges associated while proceeding with this import. 

The provided excel file was disorganized as inventory items, assembly items and packing kits were mixed out and compiled with each other and there is a difficulty in understanding the disparity between country names and short forms. We render VLookup to fetch the data.  Saved search results were 1000+ and we had filtered the same to get the products with HTS code.
